Outside the city center

  figure212
Figure 3.10:  The cathedral of Sveti Sava (Saint Sava) has already been under construction for more than sixty years. On the right in this picture you can see the monument to Karadjordje, the leader of the first Serb uprising.

You will not fail to notice the enormous silhouette of the Sveti Sava   future cathedral, which is in Vracar  ; the outside can be appreciated from the lawn near the National Library  , but to see the interior (open 9-16, Sun and Mon closed) you have to enter in the Ras travel agency, in Krusedolska. This will become, when it will be completed, the main cathedral of the Serb orthodox church, and the largest orthodox church in the world (as St. Peter in Rome is for the catholics). The inside is very impressive, although still lacking all the marbles and artwork; eventually, in a century or so, this will be one of the most important religious monuments.

Muzej africke umetnosti  , the Museum of African Art, Andre Nikolica 14, in the suburb of Senjak (open 10-18, Sun 10-14)(+). From the private collection of a Yugoslav diplomat, African art and kraft, in particular masks. Nothing to do with Serbia, but not easily seen elsewhere.

Muzej savremene umetnosti  , Museum of Contemporary Art, Usce, near the river banks of the Sava , in front of Kalemegdan  (open 10-17)(+). An interesting purpose built museum, with a large exhibition of Yugoslav painting and sculpture of the 20th century. Specially interesting the Serb and Croatian art of the '20 and '30, which was however strongly under the influence of the Paris school (compare with Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris).
